Blue Scorpion Venom: Cuba’s Miracle Drug

The treatment is now poised for a global premiere. Cuba’s state pharmaceutical company, Labiofam, recently began mass-producing a homeopathic version called Vidatox. A handful of countries have registered it for sale, and a small black market to move the product around the globe has emerged.

Hungarian drug distribution company, Medimpex, has been granted exclusive rights to import and sell Vidatox, a drug developed in Cuba used to treat cancer, to retailers in Jamaica.

According to Cuban scientists, the benefits of the homeopathic drug, Vidatox 30 CH, has raised life expectancy and quality of life in a group of patients undergoing cancer therapy.

Vidatox is already being used in Asia, Europe, North, South and Central America. Medimpex signed a contract with Cuban company Labiofam last month. The first shipment is on its way to Jamaica, said Medimpex Managing Director, Laszlo Bakon.

“We see a huge potential for the drug in Jamaica, because cancer is one of the leading causes of death in Jamaica and other countries of the world.

“The demand is definitely there. We have held meetings with oncologists in Jamaica and the feedback from them and the rest of the market is good. It is a unique cancer treatment,” said Bakon.

During the recent Labiofam International Congress in Havana, Cuba, Dr. Eva Solomon, head of the Cancer Control Group, said the drug was administered to 845 people with advanced cancer in their breast, lungs, colons, prostate and cervix, with favourable results.

The drug is administered in five sublingual drops every 12 hours, and after six months, 87 per cent of patients improved their appetite and stopped taking morphine after experiencing relief from pain, said a researcher at the Labiofam Business Group, which develops the product obtained from the venom of the Rhopalurus junceus scorpion.

Vidatox also reduces swelling and improves overall mental and emotional conditions of patients and families, he stressed.

HAVANA, Cuba, May 7 (acn) Cuba has begun to export Vidatox, a medical product for cancer therapy derived from a toxin found in scorpions, as announced by Jose Antonio Fraga, the director of the Havana-based Pharmaceutical and Biological Laboratory (Labiofam), which produces the medicine. Fraga explained that the substance is extracted from the Rhopalurus junceus, also known as red scorpion, which is an indigenous species of Cuba. Vidatox, it is the result of work by Cuban biologist, Misael Bordier with the venom of the blue scorpion

Speaking to reporters during the inauguration of a new facility for the production of Vimang, a natural antioxidant obtained from the bark of the mango tree, Fraga highlighted the existing good prospects for the commercialization of Vidatox.

The company’s director of research and development, Isbel González, explained that Vidatox is a homeopathic preparation made from five protein peptides of low molecular weight extracted from the venom of the scorpion, and which has demonstrated an “analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor effect in more than 15 different cancer cell lines.”

According to González, Vidatox has been tested on more than 10,000 cancer patients, some 3,500 of them foreigners, and has shown “positive results”, ranging from “improved quality of life” to “slowed tumor growth”.

The medication is the result of 15 years of research, and Labiofam says that its homeopathic version has now been registered and is now being commercially produced . González added that the company would continue research to produce synthetic or biotechnological versions of the compound.

The medication was produced from over 5,000 scorpions of the Rhopalurus junceus variety, native to eastern Cuba. According to the company, it has no contraindications and is compatible with any other oncological treatment.

Labiofam’s products are already present in all continents and the group has other manufacturing plants abroad: one in China and two in Viet Nam.

The director of the institution added that Labiofam is currently working to strengthen a national program for the industrial production of dietetic supplements and natural components.

Cuba is working on four research projects on anti-cancer treatments using the venom of a type of scorpion that is endemic to the island, government officials announced Tuesday.

One of those projects, which is being undertaken by the Cuban firm Labiofam, has come to fruition and the homeopathic medication Vidatox is already being sold in Cuba. Vidatox is a pain-alleviating therapeutic measure that is intended to compliment the treatment of cancer symptoms.

These and other experiences will be presented at the 2nd International Conference being held by Labiofam next September along with a Symposium on Natural Products in Therapy against Cancer, according to what company president José Antonio Fraga said at a press conference.

Cuban scientists have verified that the toxin in the venom of the Rophalorus junceus scorpion has an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and anti-tumoral effect.

The toxin is extracted from the scorpion using electrical stimulation and each animal can contribute about 0.02 milliliters of venom, equivalent to two or three drops.

To enable scientists to pursue this research, which was begun 15 years ago, Cuba created a network of scorpion raisers all over the country, Fraga noted, adding that the research leading to the creation of the medication cost some 23 million pesos (almost $1 million).

Cuba is one of Latin America’s leaders in cancer treatment and cancer research, with Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez heading to the island to receive treatment for his yet-to-be-announced form of cancer. The United Kingdom is also testing a therapeutic vaccine for advanced lung cancer developed in Cuba.

Scientists claim to have developed a new homeopathic drug from the venom of the blue scorpion to cure a range of common human cancers.

The homeopathic drug from the venom of the blue scorpion (Rhopalurus junceus), an endemic species in the western part of Cuba, can be used to treat a wide range of cancers such as those of the breast, liver, brain, prostate and lung, according to an annual symposium held in Cuba.

The symposium showcased the study of Cuban researchers into scorpion venom with a new drug called Vidatox 30 CH, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

Vidatox, produced by Cuba’s Entrepreneurial Group for Bio-Pharmaceutical and Chemical Productions (Labiofam), can help increase survival rates of cancer patients, prevent the spread of cancerous cells and improve the quality of life, the report said.

Cancer has been the second leading cause of death in Cuba among all age groups for more than four decades. About 18,000 people die of cancer in Cuba every year, according to official figures.

More than 27,000 cases of cancer are diagnosed each year, the official daily Juventud Rebelde (Rebel Youth) cited Sunday Dr Moses Santos, a specialist in internal medicine, as saying.

The disease has become the leading cause of death among children aged 5 to 10, oncologist Dr Jorge Alvarez said.

Cuba also markets four cancer vaccines to combat the disease, which are developed by the Havana Center for Molecular Immunology (CIM) and exports them to 26 countries in Latin America, Asia and Africa.

Cuban drug improves quality of life of about 65,000 cancer patients

Vidatot, a homeopathic drug, was launched in 2011.

The Cuban drug called Vidatox, differs from some drugs developed in other countries for being able to cross the blood-brain barrier and reach the nucleus of malignant cells

A Cuban drug made from blue scorpion venom has helped improve the quality of life and survival of more than 65,000 cancer patients in Cuba and abroad. The drug has primarily anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects, said Antonio Fraga, director of the state business, Labiofam.

“There are now over 65 thousand patients in Cuba and other countries that have improved their health, helped by the drug made from the blue scorpion toxin” (Rhopalurus junceus), Fraga said to a Cuban newspaper.

He stressed that with this drug, these patients “have improved their quality of life and survival, and there are really surprising cases with Vidatox” he said.

The Labiofam director emphasized that these significant results distinguish the Cuban medicine from those developed in some other countries.

He explained that there is a barrier called the blood-brain barrier in which “nothing cytostatic (anticancer) penetrates, but our product is able to pass through and reach the nucleus of malignant cells.”

cytostatic (anticancer) penetrates, but our product is able to pass through and reach the nucleus of malignant cells.”

For her part, the Director of Research and Development for Labiofam, Isabel Gonzalez, told an international news agency that they are currently “working on registering the drug in 81 countries” in order to authorize its use in cancer patients.

Labiofam, which launched this homeopathic medicine to the market in 2011, is currently working on 45 projects against cancer and other diseases.

“Among the most promising anti-tumor lines, it has five peptides (molecules of amino acids) derived and cloned,” said Gonzalez.

Labiofam is part of the Scientific Pole, west of Havana (Havana), a score of institutions responsible for producing and selling 141 products, including vaccines and drugs, for 400 million dollars annually, the second largest of the Caribbean island’s exports after nickel.
